Carl Williamson, LMHC is a psychotherapist working in downtown New York City. His work focuses on individual, couple, and relationship therapy. He applies a pragmatic, collaborative, and integrative approach.

I aim to create a collaborative space for my clients to be supported, challenged, and understood in the process of reauthoring their stories. In my work, I center empathy and care, while drawing on diverse approaches to therapy, including narrative therapy, psychoanalytic theory, and attachment theory.

Some of my interests and clinical focuses include trauma, relationships, identity development, career, depression, anxiety, sex and sexuality, gender and gender identity, non-monogamy and polyamory, and HIV/AIDS. I also work with artists, designers, creatives, and individuals in the tech industry, as I am versed in these fields' unique challenges and specific cultural contexts.

My training has focused on feminist and anti-oppression approaches to therapy, with an emphasis on multicultural competence and humility. I received a B.A. in Psychology from Vassar College and a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from the City College of New York. Before becoming a therapist, I worked as a designer in various contexts for more than a decade. I have a post-graduate certificate in family and couple therapy from the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP) and have completed level one training in Internal Family Systems (IFS).

Fees, Billing and Insurance

Individual sessions are typically 50 minutes long. Couple, relationship, family therapy runs for an hour. Sessions are conducted both in-person and via teletherapy over Zoom (a HIPAA compliant platform).

My rates are set according to industry standards in New York City. I offer sliding-scale rates, based on my availability, an individual’s financial situation, and the frequency and the time of sessions.

I am not currently paneled or in-network with any insurance company. If your insurance has out-of-network benefits, I can be seen as an out-of-network provider. In this case, you pay me after each session (I accept checks, Zelle and Venmo), and at the end of the month, I will provide you with a statement that you submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Insurance companies vary widely, and I encourage you to research your coverage before working together.

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel a session, please do so within 48 hours of our appointment. If there is a late cancelation for any reason (i.e., a scheduling conflict or a non-grave circumstance), you will be charged in full for the missed appointment. If we can work out a time to reschedule our appointment within the same week, I will not charge a late fee. If you are a current patient you can use the patient portal to make adjustments to your session, or you can reach out via email or text.
